This week’s bridge news sheet No. 290 has 4 articles. First of all there is an article about when not to go for the Moysian fit. Next you hold ♠AQ93 ♥A874 ♦J10 ♣QJ6 and open 1♣. The next hand overcalls 1NT and partner bids 2♥, what do you do? This is NOT a case for the Law of Total Tricks and you shold pass. Finally there are the two usual Dave columns about play.

Hand C: 2♥. This is a weak non-forcing bid. I prefer this to pass (and lead a ♥ against 1NT) because you have no possible entry outside ♥’s
Hi Terry,
So you’d really hate my choice then, which was double! I realise I’m four points shy of the requirement for the bid, and the hand lacks an outside entry. But hey, they’re vulnerable, and at matchpoints sometimes you have to take one or two gambles per session, no?

Hi Matt,
I believe that I said that ‘I prefer 2♥’ and not that ‘I hate dbl’. Double is obviously a reasonable option, especially if you are in a gambling mood. Some may say that the hand is a bit good for 2♥ (indeed, a 2♥ bid could be a lot weaker). The reason for the hand being written up was to emphasise that a 2♥ bid here is a weakish non-forcing bid and you do not expect partner to leap off to game.
